“Big Questions For Apple In ’09 Posted By: HYPERLINK “http://www.cnbc.com/id/15837548/cid/97553“Lee Brodie
Tech traders find themselves struggling to get a handle on Apple. What’s ‘really’ going on?
On Monday Apple CEO Steve Jobs spoke about his surprising weight loss and gaunt appearance –the subject of increased scrutiny – that came to a head a few weeks back when Apple announced that Jobs would not deliver the keynote speech at Macworld.
Some pundits speculated the decision was related to his past battle with cancer of the pancreas. However, that’s not the case. According to Apple HYPERLINK “http://data.cnbc.com/quotes/AAPL“[AAPL 94.58 3.83 (+4.22%) ], doctors determined that Steve Jobs was suffering from a hormone imbalance that has been ‘robbing’ his body of proteins needed to be healthy.
In a statement Jobs said, the remedy for “this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward” and that he has begun treatment. He added, “I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO.” Is there more here than meets the eye? We ask Piper Jaffrey analyst Gene Munster.
“Apple never says much (about the health of Steve Jobs) so that fact that they came out and said anything… is a positive. It’s a big thing for the company to address these issues.” The health concerns pretty much overshadowed this year’s Macword Expo underway in California — which may end up being a non-event. Munster says that Jobs’ absence from the conference suggests there will not be any revolutionary new products introduced at MacWorld. The only exception could be a nano iPhone, but Munster’s sources suggest that’s more likely to hit around the end of March.
What’s the bottom line? “The bottom line is that we’re still positive,” says Munster. “Although things look like gloom and doom for the computer market, we think there’s still growth ahead for Apple.””
